Russia's president Vladimir Putin promises to crush those who try to "divide the country", he says in a video clip published by the Kremlin on Thursday.

Those who try to intimidate, split our society or play on our religious or national feelings will never succeed, says Putin and adds that revenge awaits those who try.

For years, the Russian president has used his power to dismantle civil society organizations and independent media. Political opponents are imprisoned and the country has introduced strict military laws.
