"I'm free! I wrote this on the plane and am publishing it right after landing in Istanbul", the post reads, published late on Monday evening Swedish time.
The release comes after Irene Khan, an expert on freedom of expression affiliated with the UN, criticized the arrest on Sunday as "shocking news".
Abunimah, who is the head of the digital pro-Palestinian online publication Electronic Intifada – which describes itself as "Palestine's mass education weapon" – was arrested, according to the publication, in connection with a speech he was to give in Zurich on Saturday. Swiss police confirmed that they had detained a 53-year-old American citizen due to an entry ban, reported Reuters on Sunday.
In the post on X, Abunimah states that on Monday, he was led from his cell in handcuffs directly to Zurich Airport, where he was escorted by police to the plane bound for Turkey.
