A police officer from Gothenburg is being prosecuted for dereliction of duty, suspected of having encouraged his partner to flee from the police in connection with a suspected drunk driving incident last spring, reports Gothenburg-Posten.
The police officer claims that he could not intervene due to a knee injury, something the prosecutor does not believe. Witnesses from the incident claim that the police officer encouraged the woman to leave the scene. This despite him knowing that a police patrol was on its way to the scene and that the woman – his partner – was considered intoxicated.
According to my assessment, he should have gone on duty and made sure that this suspected drunk driver remained at the scene. The police colleagues were on their way there, says Jim Westerberg, chief prosecutor at the Special Prosecutor's Office, to the newspaper.
The police officer denies any wrongdoing.
The investigation against the woman suspected of drunk driving is ongoing, but has been complicated due to the police officer's actions, according to prosecutor Jim Westerberg.
