Bergslagen Tops Sweden's List for Loud Music Fines This Summer

Epa-beat and rockabilly at provocatively high volume – so far this summer, the police have handed out over 550 fines in the country. One region is undoubtedly the country's worst, as it repeatedly tops the fine league.

Since 2021, the police have been able to issue fines for disturbing behavior for people who play loud music that disturbs the surroundings.

It is certainly a culture to drive around in cars and play loud music and you should be able to continue doing so, but not so that others cannot sleep, says Maria Westby, police officer in the Bergslagen region.

Bergslagen, where Örbro, Värmland and Dalarna counties are included, has the highest number of issued fines for disturbing music from the first of June to the first week of August. The region has topped the list all four years the law has been in effect and this summer the region accounts for 50 percent of the fines issued in Sweden.

We have different events with cars, for example cruising, which makes many people travel here and play very loud music, says Maria Westby.

The region has had a hard time getting people to stop playing too loudly and therefore hopes that the law can be developed further.

The fine is currently 1000 kronor, a low amount, and many of those who play music share the sum. It is desirable to raise the amount limit, says Maria Westby.

Another alternative would be to introduce gathering places, where people can meet and let music boom from loudspeakers in a-tractors and raggar cars.

Even if the Bergslagen region repeatedly tops the list for issued fines, Maria Westby believes that it is largely because the region has found a routine that makes more people get fined.

If people come here, they notice that they get fines.
