Over 460 people have been rescued from several boats that went off course outside the Canary Islands, according to several media outlets.
The boats were said to have been carrying people primarily from countries south of the Sahara. On one of the boats, a woman had just given birth.
One of the boats is said to have left Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, 13 days ago. Up to 12 people died during the journey and there were over 70 people still on the boat, according to Tiempo de Canarias.
Several people have been taken to hospitals for medical care.
Migrating across the Atlantic is extremely dangerous due to the strong ocean currents, which means that boats that go off course can drift for weeks or months.
