E-commerce increased by 29 per cent in May compared to the same month last year and amounted to 14.9 billion kronor, according to the Swedish Trade e-commerce indicator.
In contrast to earlier in the year, the main explanation is not that more people are shopping online, but that there is a marked increase in the average purchase amount, primarily within furniture and home electronics.
"It is a very strong e-commerce indicator that is likely to have been affected by many Swedes receiving their tax refunds during the period. More money in people's pockets has enabled purchases of capital-intensive goods such as furniture and home electronics, categories that have had a tough development in recent years. It remains to be seen whether the positive trend continues, but so far this year, e-commerce is doing significantly better than the last two years," says Per Ljungberg, innovation manager at Swedish Trade in a press release.
