Steffen Tangstad, Norway's best male boxer of all time, is dead. This is reported by VG. He was 65 years old.
"Our dad, Steffen, fell asleep peacefully last night with Otto and me by his bedside after a longer period of illness. It is painful and sad. But he fell asleep peacefully and without pain", writes son Truls to VG.
Tangstad became European Champion in heavyweight on two occasions, 1984 and 1986. In 1985, he lost the title to Anders "Lillen" Eklund.
Most known is Tangstad perhaps for his match for the World Championship belt against the superstar Michael Spinks in Las Vegas, autumn 1986. That fight, the Norwegian lost on technical knockout in the fourth round.
In 2018, Tangstad told that he had been afflicted by the nerve disease polyneuropathy.
