The Democrat and congressman Adam Schiff has joined the group of party colleagues who are urging USA's President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential election.
Schiff thus becomes one of the most prominent Democrats to express doubts about the President, reports American media.
"Joe Biden has been one of the most significant Presidents in our nation's history, and his lifelong service as Senator, Vice President, and now as President has made our country better", he says in a statement.
"But our nation is at a crossroads", he continues, adding that a second term for the Republican candidate Donald Trump would "undermine the very foundation of our democracy" and that he is doubtful about whether Biden can defeat Trump in the November election.
About twenty of the Democrats' 213 members in the House of Representatives have urged the President to drop out of the election. The criticism began after Biden's disastrous performance in a TV debate against Trump in June.
In an interview with the TV channel BET News, Biden says that he would reassess whether he should continue his campaign if a doctor were to say that there are medical reasons for it, reports the New York Times.
