Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones spread lies about the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in the USA in 2012 via his site Infowars and the site's accounts on various platforms. Jones and his company were sentenced in the fall of 2022 to pay a total of 1.4 billion dollars in fines.
The aftermath also resulted in the satirical newspaper The Onion recently buying up Infowars. But now Elon Musk is stepping in to stop parts of the sale, according to several media outlets, including The Guardian.
More specifically, Musk says through his lawyers that accounts that Infowars had on X cannot be transferred to The Onion because "Infowars does not own the accounts". X does. Or in other words, Elon Musk, who owns X.
"X Corp.'s terms of use clarify that the company owns the X account, as the terms of use clarify that X Corp. only grants its users a non-exclusive license to use their accounts", it says in the submission made in the ongoing acquisition process of Infowars.
