It was in the beginning of September that a woman was found dead in her home in Trollhättan. The death was initially investigated as a suicide, but at the end of last week, a 50-year-old man was arrested, suspected of murder or manslaughter.
The man is, according to TTELA, a Norwegian citizen who was convicted as recently as last summer in Norway for aiding a suicide in Sweden. The verdict, which concerns a 73-year-old Norwegian woman, was appealed and the man was supposed to be on bail awaiting a new verdict.
According to the verdict, the man was very persistent and pressured the woman to take her life before she was ready.
They had made contact in a suicide support group. In an SMS to the 73-year-old, the man said that he had assisted in six suicides over a two-year period.
According to the verdict, the woman, who suffered from the aftermath of a cerebral haemorrhage, had carefully considered her decision to die. The man, however, "appears to have had his own interest in promoting his case" and thus ran the risk of "exploiting people in very vulnerable situations", according to the verdict.
Aiding a suicide is not a criminal offense in Sweden.
