The average age for the first child is 29.9 years and for the second child 32.6 years. The youngest first-time mothers are found in Kalmar County, while the oldest are found in Stockholm.
The National Board of Health and Welfare's new statistics on pregnancies, births, and newborns apply to 2023, when approximately 100,000 children were born. This is a decrease of 5 percent compared to the previous year.
Not since 2005 have fewer children been born in Sweden, according to our statistics, says Mikael Ohlin, statistician at the National Board of Health and Welfare, in a press release.
The statistics also show an increase in expectant mothers who use snus and mothers who undergo cesarean sections.
Furthermore, the proportion of expectant mothers with overweight or obesity (BMI 25 or higher) has almost doubled over time, from 25 percent in 1992 to 46 percent in 2023.
