During the month, 93,436 passenger trains departed, an increase of over 10,000 compared to the same period last year and more than any other October month in history, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.

At the same time, the administration notes that the amount of maintenance work this year has never been greater. This, in turn, has resulted in reduced speeds along the tracks more often – which has affected punctuality.

The definition of punctuality is that the train reaches the final station within five minutes of the timetable.

In October, 85.9 percent of passenger trains were punctual, compared to 87.5 percent in September – when 89,137 passenger trains departed.

In addition to maintenance, technical faults such as switch and track failures also affected traffic.

Unauthorized individuals in the track area also caused delays, affecting 2,148 passenger trains – and a total of 13 personal accidents occurred during the month.

Short-distance trains had a punctuality rate of 91.7 percent, medium-distance trains 81.8 percent, and long-distance trains 66.9 percent.
