In January 1970, a 15-year-old girl from Kramfors was reported missing. When the so-called Ådalsmannen, a serial rapist, was arrested, the disappearance could be linked to him.
The man was convicted in 1971 for, among other things, gross manslaughter. He had confessed to killing the girl, but the body was not found, according to several media outlets.
The girl's fate remained unknown for more than half a century. But during dives in August 2023 as part of a marine archaeological project, finds were made, writes the police on their website.
The project involved examining and documenting the seabed under the Sandöbron bridge in Kramfors. On the seabed, one of the divers found skeletal remains.
The remains were sent to the National Board of Forensic Medicine, which quickly confirmed that they were human skeletal remains from a woman.
The police suspected that it might be the missing girl and contacted her relatives to ask if they wanted to provide DNA for comparison.
The National Board of Forensic Medicine's forensic genetics department has now been able to confirm that the bone remains found belong to the girl.
