Facebook and Instagram will stop fact-checking, announced Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg a few days ago. But it will take time before it takes effect in the EU, and in Sweden, the Källkritikbyrån will continue its external review for another year.
In the USA, fact-checking will stop in March, but in the EU, laws will stop it, at least in the short term. First, a risk analysis must be conducted, and such an analysis was submitted to the EU on Tuesday. And that investigation is unlikely to be completed this year, writes journalist and social media expert Emanuel Karlsten in a post on his site.
In Sweden, the Källkritikbyrån has a contract with Meta to continue its review for another year.
"It's time for us to go back to our roots, which are based on freedom of speech on Facebook and Instagram", said Mark Zuckerberg in a video a few days ago in connection with the announcement to stop fact-checking.
Instead, the idea is that users, like Elon Musk has introduced on X, will themselves be responsible for the review, so-called community notes.
