The incoming president and his advisors, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have without grounds blamed some of the responsibility for the devastating fires in Los Angeles on diversity efforts. The head of the fire department in Los Angeles is a woman.
Outdated
Amazon wrote, according to US media, in an internal letter to employees in December that outdated programs with accompanying materials would be phased out and that the whole process would be completed before the New Year. Amazon has now also shown the letter.
"We also know that some individual employees and groups will continue to do well-meaning things that are not in line with the company's line and we may not discover it immediately. But we are working on it", wrote Candi Castleberry, one of the heads of Amazon's HR department, in a comment.
The company will focus on creating a more genuinely inclusive environment and culture, rather than a program, the company writes.
Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, is going the same way, according to an internal message - also regarding hiring, training, and selection of suppliers.
Stepped up
Conservative groups and politicians in the US have stepped up their criticism of plans of the type that Meta and Amazon are now backing out of, something that large American companies like John Deere and Walmart have already said they are doing. A Supreme Court ruling in 2023 is also mentioned as a reason, a case where the Supreme Court ruled against preferences in favor of diversity in university admissions.
"The legal and political landscape regarding the pursuit of diversity, justice, and inclusion is changing", writes Janelle Gale, deputy HR chief at Meta in an internal letter that Reuters has taken part of.
