Fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev had to struggle hard in his first match in the Grand Slam tournament Australian Open. The Russian had unexpectedly tough opposition from 418th-ranked Thai Kasidit Samrej – and clearly showed his frustration.

After losing a long rally in the third set, he went up to the net and smashed his racket when he repeatedly hit it against the net camera. The camera was also destroyed.

The 28-year-old – who has lost finals in 2021, 2022, and 2024 in the Australian Open – was warned for his behavior. He then managed to turn his mood around to advance to the second round.

Afterwards, he jokingly talked about the five-setter that lasted over three hours and meant that he plays better when he gets to play more tennis.

Why play for one and a half hours? I need at least three hours to get better shots, he says.

Next, Daniil Medvedev awaits qualifier Learner Tien from the USA.
