At least twelve people have died and dozens are missing after an earthquake in northern Myanmar, according to statements from a resident, rescue personnel, and independent media.
According to reports, around 50 houses have been buried or damaged.
The earthquake occurred in Hpakant in the state of Kachin, a mountainous region where the valuable green mineral jade is extracted for use in, for example, jewelry.
According to rescue personnel, it is difficult to find the missing due to large amounts of mud, which requires powerful machinery.
Landslides occur several times a year in the area, in 2020 at least 162 people died in a landslide nearby. In another landslide in 2015, 113 people died.
