It is important not to reveal too much, so the audience gets a week to think about what is happening, says Vicky McClure to TT.
In "Insomnia" (which should not be confused with the Stellan Skarsgård film with the same name) she plays Emma, a woman whose insomnia is driving her to madness. Emma is forced to look back at her upbringing and how her relationship with her mother and sister has affected her.
Her upbringing was not good. The contact with her sister makes the past come back, which we see in flashbacks. Emma struggles with lies, fear, sleep problems.
Loving upbringing
Vicky McClure emphasizes that her own upbringing was very loving and that she tried to find other things to relate to in the character.
I have no children, but I have two nieces and nephews, they are like my own children, and there I could find things to use.
"Insomnia" is based on a book by Sarah Pinborough and is intended as a completed series.
It's not the kind of story that requires a season two, says Vicky McClure.
She has done some film roles, but it's the TV series that have made her a name. First, it was the role as Lol in Shane Meadows' "This is England", which first came as a film and then followed by three TV series. Vicky McClure tells that a scene from "This is England 86" will always be with her – the one where Lol's dad tries to rape his daughter.
I hope I never have to do a scene like that again. We did it on the first day of filming, it was nice to get it out of the way.
Not dismissing "Line of duty"
She can be seen on TV4 in the action series "Trigger point" ("it will probably be more episodes of that") and she is not averse to doing a seventh season of "Line of duty".
If it were to become relevant, I think we're all ready to do another season, she says.
When the previous seasons were shown in England, the country practically came to a standstill when a new episode was about to be shown, and large articles were written speculating about what would happen and who the corrupt police officers were that the special unit AC-12 was chasing.
"Line of duty" was something exceptional. It hit the nerve that gets the TV audience to engage and wait for the next episode. Once it started, it got the audience to engage even more.
