Schools in Pakistan's second-largest city Lahore are being closed for a week due to air pollution.

Due to the wind direction from India being towards Lahore... Montessori schools, preschools, and elementary schools will be closed for a week, announces Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in Punjab.

Air pollution is particularly hazardous for children, and the decision applies to schoolchildren up to ten years old. The health of schoolchildren older than that will be monitored.

Hospitals have set up information desks due to the air pollution, adds the minister.

Half of the staff at government agencies and private companies will be allowed to work from home on Monday.

Over the weekend, levels of hazardous small particles in the air in Lahore were measured to be 40 times above the World Health Organization's limit values.
