Starting on Sunday, call-up orders for military service will be sent out to 7,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews, Israeli media reports.
They have so far been exempt from the military service that all other Israelis – men and women – must do for several years. But as Israel's defense forces have become increasingly strained during the recent war, demands have grown for everyone to step up.
Netanyahu is said to have been opposed to calling up the ultra-Orthodox, as it risks breaking his fragile government coalition.
On the other hand, the issue was driven hard by Yoav Gallant, the defense minister who was fired by Netanyahu last week.
How the rest of the government reacts to the new defense minister continuing with the plan remains to be seen. But Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara stated the other day that since there is now a new law, the call-up orders must be sent out.
