Iraq executed at least 21 prisoners on Wednesday, most of them convicted of "terrorism" and for being active within IS. This is reported by security sources to the news agency AFP.
All prisoners are said to have been Iraqi citizens, and all but one were men.
This is the largest mass execution reported from Iraq in many years.
In December last year, 13 prisoners were executed, which UN experts said was the most extensive mass execution in Iraq since 2020, when 20 prisoners were executed on the same day.
Iraqi courts have handed down hundreds of death sentences and life imprisonment in cases where the defendants have been accused of "terrorism" in recent years.
