Hungary is missing out on a billion euros in EU support because the country has not met the EU's requirements to combat corruption. This is the first time an EU country has experienced this.
In 2022, the EU Commission launched a process regarding, among other things, Hungary's way of handling public procurement and the lack of control and transparency in the management of EU funds. The Commission set a timetable for Hungary to meet the requirements, with several deadlines.
Hungary has fulfilled some of the requirements along the way, and money has been paid out. But the conditions for receiving 19 billion euros have not been met. By the end of 2024, one of the deadlines expired, notes the EU Commission, and thus the country is missing out on a billion euros, approximately 11 billion kronor.
