People who have drunk water contaminated by PFAS will receive compensation paid out by the municipality-owned Ronneby Environment and Technology, reports P4 Blekinge.
In total, 17 people will receive around 28,000 kronor each.
Currently, there are approximately 250 lawsuits against the company in the district court. Of these, a total of 17 are covered by the decision, according to Ronneby Environment and Technology for TT.
It's proof that they understand they need to pay out compensation, they've thrown in the towel, says Herman Afzelius, chairman of the PFAS Association, to the radio.
It's cheaper for Ronneby Environment and Technology to pay out the compensation than to continue litigating.
It means nothing, I would like to say, for the other cases, says Joakim Mårtensson, CEO of Ronneby Environment and Technology, to P4 Blekinge.
The PFAS scandal in Kallinge broke out in 2013, when the County Administrative Board in Blekinge conducted an extended sampling of environmental toxins in the groundwater. The Brantafors waterworks in Kallinge was shut down when Ronneby Environment and Technology found high levels of PFAS in the drinking water. Suspicion was directed at a nearby firefighting training site at F17, where firefighting foam containing the substances had been used. According to a new report commissioned by the defense, the leakage continues.
The Supreme Court has previously ruled that high levels of PFAS in the blood can be considered a personal injury and that it should therefore be possible to seek compensation if the cause is contaminated drinking water.
