The layoffs in the welfare sector increased by 157 percent last year. A total of 2,466 people lost their jobs, and those hardest hit are childminders and nurse assistants, according to the Omställningsfonden's survey.

Although the figures for 2024 show a significant increase compared to the previous year, they follow a ongoing negative trend. During 2022 and 2023, the layoffs in the welfare sector have continuously increased.

Among the most affected occupational groups are childminders, teachers, and student assistants. According to Eva Wikström, CEO of Omställningsfonden, the many layoffs are due to a strained economy.

"Many municipalities and regions are in a continued economically strained situation and are affected by several demographic changes, such as decreased birth rates, which have noticeable consequences for welfare employees", she says according to a press release.

The survey also shows that several employments are terminated due to illness, and nurse assistants top the list with 236 people who have lost their jobs.
