The avalanche risk in Åre, Bydalen, Sylarna, and Storulvån is currently considered significant – a three on a five-point scale – following heavy snowfall in recent days. The snowfall is expected to continue ahead of Christmas.
What should you consider if you venture out?
The ski resorts themselves are safe in pistes and near pistes, the trails are generally safe. However, it is still snowy, says Petter Palmgren at the authorities' avalanche forecasting service.
But also in the southern Lapland mountains, western Härjedalsfjällen, and in Västra Vindelfjällen, there are warnings for avalanches. There, the risk is assessed as moderate, a two on the five-point scale.
At the bottom line, it's roughly the same advice for anyone going out, regardless of where in the country it concerns. In steep slopes where a lot of new snow and drift snow have accumulated due to the wind, you should think twice before venturing out, says Petter Palmgren.
It has been a mild autumn with little snow in large parts of the mountains. With the recent heavy snowfall, the snow cover is starting to become more normal for the time of year.
As usual at this time of year, you should be careful about rocks and bushes due to the snow cover if you're out skiing or snowmobiling, he adds.
