A 50-year-old man has been arrested in Norway, suspected of instigating crimes against humanity in Cameroon.

"We are in an early stage of the investigation, and there are several investigative steps remaining", says prosecutor Anette Berger at the Norwegian National Criminal Police, Kripos, via a press release.

She states that it is the first time a person in Norway is suspected of instigating crimes against humanity.

According to Kripos, the man has a central role in an ongoing armed conflict in Cameroon. The man's defense attorney states that he denies the allegations and believes that the suspicions are based on misunderstandings about the current situation in Cameroon.

In the African country, conflicts are ongoing, including one against English-speaking separatists in the west and another against the jihadist group Boko Haram in the north.
