Four people were shot to death and 18 injured in a shootout in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, late on Saturday local time. The police theory is that it was a criminal settlement where several people were shot by mistake.

The victims were shot outdoors in Birmingham's entertainment district Five Points South.

We believe that multiple shooters fired multiple shots at a group of people, says Truman Fitzgerald from the Birmingham police to CNN.

The police investigation suggests that it was not a random shooting.

It was linked to a specific event and several of the victims were caught in the crossfire, said Fitzgerald.

The police have not yet arrested any suspects for the shooting and have not been able to investigate who or what the intended targets were.

According to the local news site al.com, so far this year, including the four fatalities on Saturday, 122 people have been murdered in Birmingham. In 2023, there were 135 murders in the city, and 144 in 2022.

Truman Fitzgerald from the Birmingham police stated after Saturday's incident that "we see far too many conflicts that are resolved with bullets".
