Around 7,000 people are expected to seek asylum in Sweden this year, according to the Migration Agency's latest forecast, a decrease of 2,500 people from the previous forecast, writes SVT News.
The decrease is mainly explained by an agreement between the government and the Sweden Democrats, which means that the statute of limitations for decisions on deportation or expulsion is extended from four to five years. Furthermore, the statute of limitations will only begin to apply once the person has left the country.
According to the Migration Agency, about a quarter of asylum applications come from individuals with previous rejections who reapply when the statute of limitations has expired.
