A ferry accident in Nigeria has claimed over 40 lives, authorities announced on Sunday. The overloaded boat was traveling on the Gummi River in Zamfara State when it capsized.
On board were 53 farmers who were heading to their plots along the river on Saturday. "Only 12 people could be rescued directly after the accident," writes Na'Allah Musa, who holds a leading position in the flood-stricken Gummi district.
Rescue personnel continued to search for possible survivors late on Sunday, but with little hope of finding any, according to Musa.
