The Swedish power system is of the utmost importance in a war situation or general heightened alert. This is evident from the experiences of the Ukraine war, where the Russians constantly target the power grid.
The government has tasked Svenska kraftnät with activating the civil defence duty. And now, the first letters are being sent to a selection of Swedes who possess some form of electrical expertise, but who may not be working as electricians or similar today. It is not intended for individuals who already work for an electricity company to be among those called.
If you are called, it is an obligation, not something you can choose.
The task: To be ready to repair damaged power lines and stations in a war situation. But technicians are also needed to man vital hydroelectric power plants.
All of the approximately 300 people who receive the letter will be informed that they will be investigated for civil defence duty. Those who progress in the selection will then receive a second letter.
Towards the end of the year, 50 people will have been called to training.
By 2028, the goal is to have trained and placed 1,000 people within the framework of the Swedish power system.
