The attacks in Russia during the night against Tuesday triggered fires tens of miles from the front, according to a source within Ukraine's security service SBU.
According to Ukrainian military, the wave of attacks against Russian territory was the largest of its kind since the war started almost three years ago.
"The Ukrainian defense forces have carried out the most massive attack on the occupiers' military installations, at a distance of 200 to 1,100 kilometers into the Russian Federation's territory", Ukraine states in a post on social media.
Explosions in Russia
Explosions have occurred at "chemical facilities, oil refineries, and warehouses" in Russia during the night, according to the SBU source, who claims that Russian military-industrial facilities have been hit.
According to Ukraine, among other things, a Russian chemical plant that manufactures rocket fuel and ammunition in the border region of Bryansk has been hit.
"Drones have successfully distracted Russian air defense and paved the way for missiles that hit the main targets", the Ukrainian military writes in a statement about a hit on a facility near the city of Seltso, over ten miles from the border.
Western weapons
The Russian military, which promises that the attacks will not go unanswered, claims that Ukraine used missiles manufactured in the USA and the UK. Russia's Defense Ministry states that it has shot down six US-made Atacms missiles over Bryansk and the British missile Storm Shadow over the Black Sea.
In the region of Tatarstan, a drone has hit a gas storage tank near the city of Kazan, according to reports and images published in Russian media.
Over 60 miles southwest of Kazan, in Russian Engels, a "massive drone attack" has damaged two industrial areas, writes the region's governor on the messaging service Telegram. A fire is reported to have broken out at one of the sites.
