The sight of the exotic sea bird on Öland made the ornithologists jump for joy.
Ornithologist Christian Cederroth tells P4 Kalmar about the unusual observation:
It's completely crazy. We just stood there and screamed and jumped up and down with joy.
The brown booby was first recorded in Sweden in November 2021 and usually breeds on tropical islands in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Pacific.
Later, the same brown booby was seen at Ottenby on southern Öland. There, it almost ended badly.
A sea eagle attacked, but the booby got away. The eagle then launched a renewed attack and had the brown booby in its claws. But it managed to get away again and dived. In the end, the sea eagle gave up.
The booby seems to have made it, miraculously, says Christian Cederroth.
