At least 20 people have died in an outbreak of a waterborne disease in southern Sudan over the past three days. More than 800 are being treated in hospitals for acute diarrhea and the number is rising, according to Doctors Without Borders.
The outbreak occurred after a reported drone attack on a power station about 27 miles south of the capital Khartum. The attack has left the city of Kosti on the White Nile River without clean drinking water.
"The most likely source of infection is the river, where many families have fetched water with donkey carts after a major power outage in the area", writes Doctors Without Borders.
The cholera hospital in Kosti is forced to care for patients outdoors and on the floors since there are no available beds left. Local restaurants and markets in Kosti have closed as a precautionary measure.
Sudan's healthcare system is already severely strained due to the civil war that has been raging since 2023.
