Frederiksen: "We will arm massively"

Denmark is facing a massive buildup of the defense. On Wednesday, an action plan will be presented, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) during a question hour in the parliament.

We will arm massively to take care of Denmark, says Frederiksen.

On Wednesday, Danish party leaders are also called to a meeting about the issue, according to Danish TV2. The invitation applies to the leaders of the parties behind the previous defense agreement in Denmark.

According to Frederiksen, it's about arming to avoid war – and it must happen at high speed, she emphasizes.

"Risk of mistakes"

And with the speed comes a greater risk of mistakes. I hope everyone in the Folketing is ready to accept that, she says.

The Prime Minister announces that Denmark's defense chief will be given more authority to make armament decisions in the coming years. She describes the security situation as more dangerous than it has ever been during her lifetime and says that the situation is worse than during the Cold War.

We don't have time for long political discussions and debates.

According to DR, there are plans to establish a fund that will enable investments of approximately 75 billion Swedish kronor in additional armament during the next two-year period.

This will mean that Denmark will reach defense investments equivalent to three percent of GDP in the short term, according to Berlingske.

This is happening in the light of the USA's message at last week's NATO meeting and the security conference in Munich.

Not taken for granted

There, it was stated that US forces in Europe should not be taken for granted, that NATO membership for Ukraine is not currently an option, and that a return to the war-torn country's borders from before 2014 is "unrealistic".

US President Donald Trump has also initiated a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Ukraine – which Europe as a whole and possibly even Kyiv seem to be excluded from. Due to this, French President Emmanuel Macron held a crisis meeting on Monday, which Frederiksen participated in.
