Previously, there was no upper limit for nicotine content in snus in Denmark. The small nicotine-free snus pouches are sold with different amounts of nicotine, ranging from a few milligrams to 35 milligrams per snus.
According to the department, 10 milligrams is the most popular strength among 15-29-year-olds. About half of them use smoke-free nicotine products containing between 10 and 14 milligrams.
Now we're setting a limit on how much nicotine is allowed in nicotine pouches, which unfortunately are all too popular among children and young people, says Interior and Health Minister Sophie Løhde.
The average nicotine content in a regular cigarette is around 1-2 milligrams.
Denmark has also taken several measures previously. For example, the tax on nicotine products was increased from June 1, 2023. A snus can then went up in price by 12 kronor.
