The power outage on Tuesday afternoon was the country's largest in over ten years. Over 90 percent of the population of 20 million people were affected, and a nighttime curfew was introduced.
The area without power stretched from Arica in the north to Los Lagos in the south.
In the capital city of Santiago, the subway came to a standstill, traffic lights stopped functioning, people were trapped in elevators, and offices had to be evacuated when the power suddenly disappeared.
According to Interior Minister Carolina Toha, there is no reason to assume that it was an attack or sabotage, but rather that it is likely a system failure in the power grid.
