After 309 cyberattacks against the healthcare sector in the EU in 2023, an action plan is now being presented to increase digital security.
"Prevention is better than cure, so we must prevent cyberattacks from occurring. But if they do occur, we must have everything in place to detect them and quickly recover," writes the new EU Commissioner for Technical Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, in a press release.
The action plan presented on Wednesday includes, among other things, a task for the EU's cybersecurity organization Enisa to create a special support group for hospitals and healthcare providers to provide support and training. Furthermore, they want to develop a rapid response service to help hospitals and others affected by cyberattacks.
According to the EU Commission, more than half of the attacks against the healthcare sector in 2021-23 were made for extortion purposes.
