China has launched an investigation into the import of pork from the EU following suspicions of price dumping, the country's trade department announced on Monday.
The investigation is the latest move in a burgeoning trade war between China and the EU. Last week, the EU Commission announced that tariffs on electric cars from China may be increased by up to an additional 38 per cent in July.
Beijing has warned that the increased tariffs will "harm Europe's own interests".
China is the EU's most important export market for pork, although volumes have decreased in recent years due to a domestic surplus in China. Farmers in Spain, Denmark, and the Netherlands account for the largest share of exports.
In January, China launched a similar investigation into the import of cognac.
