On Thursday evening, San Marino and Liechtenstein met again - now in the D-division of the Nations League.
Before the meeting, the two countries had a combined streak of 179 matches without a win. The largest part of that streak was held by San Marino, which had not won in 140 matches. Liechtenstein had "only" 39 consecutive matches without a win.
But at the final whistle, the home fans of San Marino could finally celebrate a win again.
Historic joyful scenes unfolded at the Stadio Olimpico di San Marino in Serravalle on Thursday evening when 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli scored the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute.
Liechtenstein made a brave attempt to equalize, but without success. Instead, San Marino broke their 20-year-long streak and took their first official win in a competitive match since the national team was started in 1990. Wild joyful scenes erupted among supporters, leaders, and players.
At the same time, several players in Liechtenstein's national team collapsed, and saw their streak extended to 40 consecutive matches without a win.
