The suspected perpetrator, described as a 23-year-old Syrian citizen, has been radicalized in a short time via the internet, according to Karner.
He was arrested shortly after the knife attack in the city of Villach in southern Austria on Saturday evening.
In the attack, a 14-year-old boy was killed and five more people were injured, two of them seriously.
According to the police spokesperson Rainer Dionisio, the 23-year-old stabbed passersby in the city center. He was stopped when a food delivery driver who witnessed the attack drove into him with his car. According to the police, this likely prevented further crimes.
