The statement comes after the recent cable breaks on the Baltic Sea floor. On Boxing Day, Finnish police boarded the oil tanker Eagle S, which is suspected of being part of a "shadow fleet".

Russia is believed to be using internationally registered vessels to transport oil and thus circumvent sanctions imposed due to the war in Ukraine.

Germany's Foreign Minister wants to take tougher action against the suspected vessels in the Baltic Sea. She wants the EU to issue new sanctions specifically targeting the vessels that Russia is suspected of using.

"Vessels are destroying important underwater cables in the Baltic Sea almost every month," says Baerbock in a statement to the German media company Funke.

Baerbock describes the activity as a deliberate threat to the environment and international security.

"It's very hard to believe that this is due to coincidences," she says.
