Over the weekend, the captain – a New Zealand man in his 50s – was subjected to a two-hour police interrogation, according to reports. Italian prosecutors announced yesterday that they are investigating suspected negligence and multiple manslaughter, but did not point out any specific suspects.
We have tried to get as much information as possible from the crew and the survivors – all I can say is that it all happened very, very suddenly, said prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio at a press conference over the weekend.
The luxury yacht Bayesian had around 20 people on board when it sank a week ago. Before the shipwreck, a storm had brewed up, but the vessel was close to land and should have been able to withstand such weather. It filled with water in less than a quarter of an hour.
15 people were rescued, one was found dead shortly after the shipwreck, and another six were sucked into the depths, including IT magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter. The seventh and final victim – Lynch's daughter – was recovered on Friday.
The 56-meter-long yacht lies on the bottom at a depth of around 50 meters.
