Al Jazeera: Criticized documentary is well-balanced

The criticized documentary series from Al Jazeera, where Sweden is accused of forcibly taking children into care on flimsy grounds, is nuanced, claims an Al Jazeera chief according to Ekot on Sveriges Radio.

In the documentary series from the Qatar-based media company, the image is presented that Swedish authorities take children into custody on vague grounds. Often, the reason for the custody is not mentioned in the series, and in one case that SVT previously reported on, court documents show that children, among other things, were subjected to psychological abuse, did not attend school, and were hungry.

Awad Jumaa, head of the program and purchasing unit at Al Jazeera's streaming platform 360, tells Ekot that he believes all relevant official documents are included in the documentary.

The series does not only focus on Sweden but on several Western countries.

The documentary series bears some resemblance to the so-called LVU campaign a few years ago, a disinformation campaign where Swedish authorities were claimed to kidnap Muslim children. It led to an increased threat against Sweden.

Awad Jumaa says that those who made the documentary were aware of the previous disinformation campaign.

We are very clear with our language, and we were very cautious, for example, not to use the word "kidnapped". So we have been extremely meticulous to ensure that we have a very balanced and well-made film.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) has previously stated that he is concerned about the message in the series.
