Australia finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympic Games 2021 and lost to Sweden in the bronze match at the home World Championship last summer, but this year's Olympic Games became a failure.

This has consequences for the national team's Swedish head coach Tony Gustavsson, who after four years in the post must leave.

"Australian football will forever have a place in my heart and I will follow and cheer for you in the future", says the 50-year-old in a statement.

Australia had a tough group in the Olympic Games. The elimination became definitive after the 1–2 loss to the USA on Wednesday evening.

Australia lost 0–3 in the Olympic Games premiere against Germany, but the decisive match was against bottom team Zambia in the second match. There, it was indeed a 6–5 win after Australia turned around a 2–5 deficit, but the team had needed to score more goals to advance as one of the two best third-placed teams.
