Japan received a record number of tourists last year, specifically 36.8 million visitors according to statistics from the country's tourist organization. The previous record figure was 32 million and was recorded in 2019 before the outbreak of the pandemic.
The large tourist flow has occurred after the Japanese yen weakened against other currencies and particularly the US dollar, which has contributed to attracting tourists to the country.
The view of tourists is, however, mixed and from several quarters, voices have been raised to impose restrictions as the large number of visitors has had negative consequences for residents in certain popular cities and areas.
