Over 160,000 children have been vaccinated against polio in Gaza in three days, according to the World Health Organization's representative in the Palestinian territories.
We have exceeded the estimated target, says WHO's Rik Peeperkorn during a video conference.
The vaccination is expected to continue for at least ten more days. In total, over 500 teams will vaccinate around 640,000 children in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus in war-torn Gaza Strip.
Polio is highly contagious and spreads mainly among children. In about one in every hundred infected, the disease attacks the nerves in the spinal cord, which can lead to paralysis and death.
