"Nearly 9 million people have been affected by climate risks over the last twelve months, with over 500,000 displaced by floods, drought, and other disasters", reports IOM.

Between 2021 and 2024, nearly 3 million people were displaced, and 988,000 were forced to temporarily relocate due to the climate.

"Although Afghanistan contributes minimally to global carbon dioxide emissions, Afghanistan ranks among the top ten countries most severely affected by climate change", says Mihyung Park at IOM in a press release.

IOM estimates that over 11 million people in the country are at high risk of suffering severe consequences from climate disasters in the future.
