The Viking Museum on Djurgården presents the Viking Age through archaeological finds, reconstructed settings and interactive displays. Its stories cover women, children and men living on Scandinavian farms, as well as seafarers who travelled through Europe to trade and raid. The museum says its aim is to offer a historically grounded view of the period beyond the image of Vikings as only raiders.
Guides in Viking-era clothing answer questions and tell stories. Guided tours in Swedish and English run every hour, every day; tours for children are also held during school holidays and weekends. Ragnfrid’s Saga is a dramatised ride through 10th-century Europe, following Harald on a journey involving trade and raiding. The story draws on historical events and themes of family, courage, grief and love.
This week, the museum’s listed autumn-break event, “Among Draugr and Monsters”, runs through Sunday, 1 November. Restaurant Eld serves food with Nordic influences, using seasonal ingredients, and has views over Skeppsholmen and Wasahamnen. The museum shop sells souvenirs and gifts with historical connections, including tea, jam, Icelandic liquorice and drinking horns described as historically accurate.
