Skansen is an open-air museum and zoo on Royal Djurgården. Visit Stockholm describes it as the world’s oldest open-air museum. It says 150 farms and dwellings from across Sweden were dismantled and moved here, offering a view of the country’s buildings and history. The zoo has animals native to Scandinavia and a petting zoo for children. There are two indoor aquariums: Skansen Aquarium and the Baltic Sea Science Center.
Visitors can explore historic settings and see Swedish traditions celebrated through the year, including Midsummer, Walpurgis Night and Lucia. Skansen’s mobile park guide offers walking routes and information on Swedish history, flora and fauna. The venue’s shops sell handicrafts, design, decorations and souvenirs. Visit Stockholm says the site also has views over Stockholm.
For the coming winter season, Skansen lists a historical Christmas market on Fridays to Sundays, from 27 November to 20 December. The market tradition dates to 1903. Skansen advertises handicrafts, design, sweets, hand-poured candles and gifts. The venue also advertises Christmas buffets at Solliden, Stora Gungan and Gubbhyllan.
