The Baltic Sea Science Center at Skansen combines aquariums with an exhibition about efforts to preserve Baltic Sea wildlife. The aquariums cover underwater habitats from coastal archipelagos to the open sea, using brackish water and water with relatively high salinity.
Visitors can explore the exhibits at their own pace, follow audio guides through the center or join an animal talk. Private tours can also be booked. The center's educational programs let students investigate questions and phenomena about life beneath the surface; schools in Stockholm and Huddinge municipalities can book free sessions.
The exhibition puts the Baltic Sea in a longer time frame: the sea as it exists today is less than 3,000 years old. Before that, it was both a lake and a sea with varying salinity, and it continues to change. The aquariums and exhibition address the sea’s wildlife and the challenges involved in preserving it.
Admission to the Baltic Sea Science Center is included in the ticket for Skansen.
